Aside from my Mama, my Aunties, and my Gramma-- Eunice Waymon, better known as Nina Simone, has been a great idol of mine since I first stumbled across her famous, “No fear,” interview on YouTube. I’ve never been big on idolizing celebrities because I see them as the same red-blood-bleeding, sit-down-to-poop, often-insecure human beings as I am. But Nina? The fierce, unabridged, down-to-earth, humble, and sincere woman whose aura engulfs me whenever I hear her voice? She was a force to be reckoned with! One thing that stands out to me about a person’s personality is the quality of being genuine. I’ve always had a sort of sixth sense for true sincerity and genuineness and am drawn to those character types. This was Nina! The fact that Nina knew she wasn’t perfect and didn’t claim or try to be is what keeps her spirit lingering near me. She defied societal expectations, while standing for what she believed in. If you’ve ever heard me call someone beautiful, most likely I was not speaking about their physical attributes, but rather referring to their character. Nina Simone was the beautiful that I aspire to be.
“Life is short. People are not easy to know. They're not easy to know, so if you don't tell them how you feel, you're not going to get anywhere, I feel.”
-Nina Simone (February 21, 1933 – April 21, 2003)

Nina Simone’s message is still relevant in 2021, and she introduced us to the power of being “Young, Gifted, and Black”!

Yes those celebrities who used their platforms are different kind of special in my eyes. Now a days all they care about is the money smh to be fearless and black is what I crave to be…

Nina Simone was a born soldier. She made grace seem feeble. And that’s a compliment…
